On March 3rd, the general manager of Battery Cluster Portugal, Fernando Machado, appeared on the ADN – Análise, Dinheiro e Negócios program on Porto Canal for an insightful discussion about the future of batteries and Portugal’s strategic role in the energy transition. The interview covered key topics such as energy storage, lithium exploration, and major investments in the battery industry.
Portugal at the forefront of the energy transition – During the interview, Portugal’s accelerated evolution in the renewable energy sector was highlighted. Without its own fossil fuel resources, the country invested early in hydro, photovoltaic, and wind energy, leading to significant advances both in the national grid and self-consumption. More and more Portuguese citizens are investing in solar panels and batteries to reduce their dependence on the grid and lower energy costs.
Battery Cluster Portugal has played an active role in promoting energy communities, enabling a more efficient and sustainable use of energy. Recently, applications for mini-agendas were opened, an opportunity that the Cluster is embracing to support the creation of energy communities.
Opportunities and challenges in lithium exploration – The interview also addressed lithium exploration, a crucial resource for battery production, with Portugal holding the largest lithium reserves in Europe. The potential positive impact of this sector on the national economy, particularly in the northern region where the main reserves are located, was emphasized.
Despite initial concerns from local communities, increasing awareness of the economic and social benefits of lithium exploration has helped mitigate opposition. The case of Savannah, the company responsible for lithium extraction in Boticas, was cited as an example of how royalties paid to the municipality can boost local investments in healthcare and education. It is estimated that by 2027, Portuguese lithium will be available on the market.
Portugal in the battery value chain – Another key point was Portugal’s strategic position in the battery value chain, from lithium extraction to recycling. The country has attracted significant investments, such as the CALB gigafactory in Sines, which will supply both the European and American markets. Additionally, Bondalti has set up a refinery in Portugal, and companies like Edmtech, LuxOEnergy, Addvolt, and Meterboost are alreadt producing innovative batteries with national patents. Battery recycling is also ensured with B.again, an initiative by DST Solar.
This integration of the entire battery value chain within a 260km radius places Portugal in a privileged position in the sector, establishing itself as one of Europe’s leading hubs for battery development and innovation.
