The European Commission has announced the approval of 47 innovative projects in the battery sector to strengthen the production, processing, and recycling of essential raw materials within the EU. This initiative aims to ensure a secure and diversified supply, reducing dependence on imports and reinforcing key sectors such as the green and digital transitions, defense, and aerospace.
With a total planned investment of 22.5 billion euros, the projects are spread across 13 Member States and cover 14 of the 17 critical raw materials defined by the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).
Among the approved projects, three promoted by Battery Cluster associates stand out: Savannah Resources, Lusorecursos, and Lifthium Energy. These companies plat a key role in the battery ecosystem in Portugal, contributing to the energy transition and strengthening Europe’s independence in securing critical materials for electric mobility and energy storage.
- Savannah Resources – One of the leading lithium extraction projects in Europe, the company will enhance the availabilitt of essential resources for sustainable battery production.
- Lusorecursos Portugal Lithium – Dedicated to the extraction of raw materials with high technological value, specifically for the production of high-quality lithium-ion batteries.
- Lifthium Energy – Focused on lithium refining using sustainable technologies with a reduced carbon footprint – the so-called green lithium.
These projects represent a fundamental step in consolidating Portugal as a strategic player in the European battery value chain, fostering innovation, sustainability, and the creation of qualified jobs in the energy transition sector.
With this decision, the European Union reinforces its commitment to decarbonization and technological independence, accelerating the development of sustainable and competitive solutions for the future of energy and electric mobility.
The Battert Cluster congratulates its associates on the recognition of their strategic role and will continue to support initiatives that drive growth and innovation in Portugal’s battery sector.
