The Battery Cluster Portugal took part in the UPCELL Alliance Event Lisbon 2026, which took place on April 8-9 in Lisbon, bringing together key European stakeholders from across the battery ecosystem.
Organised by the UPCELL Alliance, in partnership with the Battery Cluster Portugal and Instituto Superior Técnico, the event served as a key platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and strategic collaboration.
The opening session featured Claude Laperiere, President of the UPCELL Alliance, setting the stage for two days of discussions on the future of the European battery value chain.
During the event, Portugal was identified as one of the five countries to watch in the development of the battery sector, according to Joachim Arnold, CEO of OCO Global, reinforcing the country’s growing relevance in this strategic ecosystem.
The event also featured strong participation from Cluster members, including Instituto Superior Técnico, Savannah Resources, Hyperion Renewables, and Universidade do Minho, who contributed as speakers across different sessions. The support of Aralab as event sponsor is also worth highlighting. The Battery Cluster Portugal would like to thank all its members who attended the event, contributing to the visibility and dynamism of the Portuguese battery ecosystem.
In the panel “Materials Supply Chain in Europe & Recycling as a Strategic Lever – New Opportunities for Technology Providers”, speakers included Antonio Neves Costa, Truls Johansen, João Gomes, and Guillaume de Verthamon, who addressed challenges and opportunities in material supply chains and the strategic role of recycling.
The panel “Beyond EVs – Emerging and High-Growth Applications for Batteries” explored new battery applications beyond electric mobility, with contributions from Ken Davies, Carla Pedro, Manuel Rato, and Donia Marzougui.
The Battery Cluster Portugal was also represented by its Director-General, Diogo Fula, who took part in the session “Building a Resilient and Sustainable Battery Supply Chain”, presenting the Portuguese battery cluster and its role in strengthening a more resilient and sustainable European value chain.
Hosting this event in Lisbon, through the collaboration between the UPCELL Alliance, the Battery Cluster Portugal and Instituto Superior Técnico, further reinforces Portugal’s growing importance in the European battery landscape and fosters synergies between industry, academia, and policymakers.
