22 May, 2026

The Battery Science & Innovation Forum 2026 brought together researchers, industry representatives and key stakeholders from the European battery ecosystem in Braga to discuss innovation, collaboration and the strategic challenges of the sector. Battery Cluster Portugal took part through the moderation of the roundtable on opportunities and challenges in the European battery industry by its General Director, Diogo Fula.

On 20 and 21 May, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory hosted the Battery Science & Innovation Forum 2026 in Braga. The event was promoted by Battery Cluster Portugal members CeNTI, International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory and dstgroup, in partnership with the Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais.

The forum brought together researchers, companies, technology centres, policymakers, startups and other stakeholders from the battery and energy storage ecosystem, fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration across the entire battery value chain — from advanced materials and cell design to industrial scale-up, systems integration and applications.

Over the course of two days, the event featured keynote lectures by international experts, scientific and industrial sessions, panel discussions, prototype demonstrations and networking moments, strengthening the connection between research, technological development and industrial application.

Battery Cluster Portugal was represented by its General Director, Diogo Fula, who moderated the roundtable “Opportunities and Challenges in the European Battery Sector”. The panel featured Patrik Johansson, Director of Batteries 2030+ and representative of Uppsala University; João Gomes, Chief Executive Officer of b.again and dstgroup; João Calado, representing Lifthium and Bondalti; Ricardo Simões, Head of Innovation at CCDR Norte; and Nina Carretero, Secretary General of the Upcell Alliance, in a discussion focused on the main opportunities and challenges facing the European battery sector.

The initiative reinforced Portugal’s position within the European battery ecosystem, highlighting the country’s capabilities in research, innovation and industrialisation linked to the energy transition.
